-This is for the South group, meeting in Castaic-
Grab your shovel and rakes - we have history to save!!
With a record breaking El Niño coming up, we are ready to take action to preserve this old road - with the help of our wonderful volunteers!
Part of the reason the Old Ridge Route has lasted over the years is the road’s intricate drainage system. Around 140 culverts and drainage chutes! On November 8th, we are taking on the massive project of clearing brush and debris from that system. One team will be starting on the north end and one team will be starting on the south end, working our way through as many locations as we can. Meeting in the middle at Reservoir Summit for lunch and a history talk.
What to expect:
You’ll meet up with our guide at the designated location and they will take the group up to the road after a sign in and safety meeting. Be sure to pay attention to if you’re in the north or south group! The day will include using hand tools such as shovels and rakes to clear dirt and debris from the drainage areas. Some will be repaired with cold patch or concrete. You’ll be working outdoors in the Angeles National Forest so there will be dirt, bugs and occasionally wildlife. You’ll see some stunning views which remain nearly the same as they were 100 years ago and learn about the history of the road. Ask as many questions as you can think of!
What to bring:
Sun protection, a jacket (it can get cold and windy!), a hat, lots of water and snacks. We do have hand tools but you’re welcome to bring some as well! Make sure you’re in a car with ground clearance. No need for 4WD or a truck, something equivalent to a RAV4 will make it just fine!
We’ll have a wonderful time saving some history!
