The Ridge Route has been hit pretty hard in the recent rain storms. In the last 7 days, Sandberg Weather Station has reported 7.32 inches of rain and another storm is expected to hit after New Years. Minor slides have been reported at Swede's Cut and Horseshoe Bend as of 12/25/2025. Mudflow across the road is reported in multiple locations. Blocked culverts present another threat.
This road is kept passable by a key group of volunteers. We have been working extra hard this year to prepare for these winter storms and I do believe that work is the reason the road held through this first storm. But we do have some cleanup to do!
- What to expect -
We will travel as far as it is safe, making stops to clear mud and debris from the road. You will be using shovels, rakes and brush cutters. We are working within the Angeles National Forest in a remote area with no restrooms or services. The road will only be passable to vehicles with ground clearance such as trucks and Jeeps. Absolutely no cars on this trip.
- What to bring -
Jacket (it gets cold and windy up there), work gloves, closed toed shoes (preferably boots with traction), a hat, snacks and plenty of water.
- Meeting Location -
Depending on what is passable, we will either meet in Castaic at the O'Reilly Auto parking lot or in Gorman at the Carl's Jr parking lot. An email will go out to inform volunteers of the meeting location once we have assessed the road after the January 1-7th storm.
Special heavy equipment note: If you have a rubber tired tractor or skid steer and would like to volunteer, please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator, Samantha, at sbabroff@ridgeroute.org
